Fort Western as built in 1754 in anticipation of the Seven Years War. It was located at at the head of navigation on the Kennebec River, very near the site of the Cushnoc trading post, and was intended to supply Fort Halifax, located seventeen miles upriver at Winslow, Maine, which served to protect the Mine coast from invasion from Quebec. The curtain wall and blockhouses are reconstructions.
