A View of Louisbourg in North america, taken near the Light House when that City wa beseiged in 1758 by Pierre-charles Canot.
The French fortress of Louisbourg was built at great expense in 1713 following the loss of mainland Acadia by the Treaty of Utrecht in 1713-15. Populated by French refugees from Newfoudland,, it protected the entrance to the St. Lawrence River and served as a base for operations against the British.
It was captured by New Englanders during King George's War but returned at the war's end. It's recapture in 1759 prepared the way for a successful British attack on Quebec in 1759.
